How do you make iced coffee at home that isn't watery?
Short answer: Brew it stronger than you would for hot coffee, because the ice is going to melt into it. The easiest way is to brew a double-strength batch straight onto ice. The other is cold brew: steep coarse grounds in cool water for about 12 hours, then dilute the concentrate over ice. Either way, the ice is part of the recipe.
Watery iced coffee isn't a bean problem. It's math.
Why does homemade iced coffee taste weak?
Regular hot coffee is brewed to be drunk as is. Pour it over a glass of ice and the melt waters it down. The fix is to brew as if the ice were part of the water, because it is.
Method 1: Brew hot, straight onto ice
This is the fast one. One well-tested recipe uses:
- 30 g medium-coarse ground coffee
- 225 g near-boiling water
- 225 g ice in the carafe
Brew through a pour-over cone directly onto the ice. The hot coffee is double strength, and the ice melts it down to normal strength while it chills. That makes about 16 ounces. Pour over fresh ice and go.
A kitchen scale makes this a lot easier, but it isn't required. Once you've done it by weight, eyeball it next time.
Method 2: Cold brew concentrate
This is the patient one, and it's great for the week ahead. The US coffee industry's trade association gives these numbers:
- Ratio: 1 g coffee to 4 to 5 g water (1:4 to 1:5)
- Water: room temperature or cooler
- Time: about 12 hours
Coarse grind, stir, cover, steep, strain. That ratio makes a concentrate, so add water or milk to taste over ice. Keep it in the fridge.
Small moves that help
- Coffee ice cubes. Freeze leftover coffee in a tray. Now the melt is coffee too.
- Chill your glass. A cold glass melts less ice.
- Sweeten while it's warm. Sugar dissolves better in hot coffee. For cold brew, a simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated until clear) mixes in easily.
Three clubhouse-style builds
- The clean one. Double-strength brew over ice, nothing else. Saturday morning, first tee.
- The creamy one. Cold brew concentrate, a splash of milk, a little simple syrup.
- The 19th hole. Cold brew over coffee ice cubes with a pinch of cinnamon in the syrup. Slow afternoon, no plans.
When a template fits, and when it doesn't
We don't make iced coffee recipe cards yet. Plenty of people start brewing at home to spend less at the café, so the closest honest fit is the 2027 Budget Planner Spreadsheet. It's a monthly and yearly budget-vs-actual spreadsheet for $7.99 on Etsy, not a recipe product. Give coffee its own category and watch the number.
It fits if you want to see what your coffee habit really costs over a year.
Skip it if you just want a better cup. Everything you need for that is above.

FAQ
What is the difference between iced coffee and cold brew?
Iced coffee is brewed hot and then chilled, usually over ice. Cold brew is steeped in room-temperature or cooler water for hours and tastes smoother and less bitter.
Can you put hot coffee in the fridge to make iced coffee?
Yes, chilling brewed coffee first means less ice melts in the glass. For the best flavor, brewing double strength onto ice is quicker.
How strong should cold brew concentrate be?
A ratio of 1 part coffee to 4 or 5 parts water makes a concentrate. Dilute it with water or milk over ice until it tastes right to you.
