How many games do you need for a Christmas party?

Short answer: For a two- to three-hour Christmas party, plan three to five games and keep one backup. Open with something people can play as they arrive, put the loud group game in the middle, and end on something short. Any more than that and you're running a schedule, not a party.

That's our rule of thumb. Here's the thinking behind it.

Why not just print everything?

Because nobody wants a host with a clipboard. Games are there to fill the gaps: the slow start, the post-dinner slump, the moment before people start reaching for their coats. Three to five games covers those gaps. The rest of the night belongs to the food and the conversation.

The backup is for the room you didn't expect. Maybe the charades crowd turns out to be quiet, or the trivia table finishes in ten minutes flat.

What order should the games go in?

Think of it like a round of golf. Ease in on the front nine, save the drama for the back.

Slot What it needs to do Game types that fit
Arrivals Play solo or in pairs, no explaining Bingo, word search
Warm-up Get people talking Would you rather, trivia
Main event Whole room, a bit loud Charades, team trivia
Wind-down Short, easy to stop Missing vowels, one last bingo call
Backup Swap in if something flops Whatever got the biggest laugh

Bingo is a strong opener because it can run in the background all night. Hand out cards at the door and call numbers between other games.

How do you prep without losing an afternoon?

Twenty minutes the night before beats scrambling while the doorbell rings.

Do you need prizes?

Not really. A small prize gives a game a finish line, and that helps. Candy, a spare ornament or first pick of the dessert table all work. Skip anything that makes the losing team feel like they lost something.

When a printable bundle fits, and when it doesn't

Our Christmas Party Games Bundle has 12 games across 25 pages, including trivia with answer keys, bingo (8 cards plus a caller sheet), 24 charades cards, a word search, would you rather and missing vowels. It comes as a printable PDF in US Letter and A4 for $6.99, delivered through Etsy.

It fits if you want the whole lineup in one download and would rather pick three to five games from 12 than invent them.

Skip it if your crew already has a game they play every year. Don't fix what works. A deck of cards and a good playlist can carry a small gathering on their own.

Big crowd? The Christmas Bingo Mega Pack has 50 unique bingo cards for $5.99. Staying up for the countdown a week later? Our New Year's Eve Party Games pick up where Christmas leaves off, and the Holiday Party Games Bundle puts the Christmas, office and New Year's Eve packs in one download for $12.99. To compare all our holiday packs, see printable Christmas, office party and New Year's Eve games: what to pick.

FAQ

What is a good first game for a Christmas party?

Bingo or a word search. Guests can start as soon as they walk in, and nobody has to stop and explain rules.

How long should each party game last?

Aim for 15 to 20 minutes and stop while people are still having fun. Ending a game early beats watching it fizzle.

How far ahead should I print Christmas party games?

Print and cut everything a day or two before the party. That leaves time to reprint a page if the printer acts up.
