What games work for a Thanksgiving party with friends?
Short answer: Games for a Thanksgiving with friends should work with a full plate and a loud room. Start with trivia or would you rather at the table, move to charades or drawing cards once the dishes clear, and keep a word search or scavenger hunt for anyone who'd rather sit back. Two or three games covers the whole evening.
What makes a friends' Thanksgiving different from family Thanksgiving?
A friends' Thanksgiving is a holiday dinner shared among friends on or near Thanksgiving Day. In 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, so a lot of friend dinners land on the weekend before or after.
The room is different too. It's usually potluck, often a mix of close friends and friends-of-friends, and nobody's grandmother is keeping score. That changes which games work.
Which games work best with friends?
- Who's most likely to. The best game for a group of friends, full stop. It's fast, it's funny and nobody needs to know the rules.
- This or that. Low-stakes questions that start real arguments. Good for breaking up a table of people who just met.
- Thanksgiving trivia. Teams of three or four. Mix tables so the people who arrived together don't all end up on one team.
- Charades and drawing cards. Save these for after the meal, when people want to get up and move.
- Grateful A to Z race. A thankful-themed game with a race built in. A little sappy, competitive enough that nobody minds.
What should you avoid?
Anything that runs long while food is still coming out. Nobody wants to stop a charades round to pass the stuffing. Keep the table games short and save the big group game for later.
What does a simple game plan for a friends' Thanksgiving look like?
| When | Game | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Arrivals | Bingo or word search | Something to do while the last dish heats up |
| At the table | Would you rather, this or that | Talking games that don't need hands free |
| After dinner | Charades or drawing cards | Gets people up off the couch |
| Late | Who's most likely to | The one people talk about on the way home |
This is an example. If your group is small, skip straight to the table games.

What games work for a group of friends who don't all know each other?
Team trivia with mixed teams and this or that work well. Both get people talking without putting anyone on the spot.
